2014 Seoul Honorary Citizens

by Seoul Metropolitan Government, 03/12/2014

The honorary citizenship of Seoul is the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s means of expressing Seoul’s appreciation toward foreigners who have contributed to ensuring the city develops and claims its position as a global city with wide-scale international exchange. As means of building friendly partnerships with foreign countries, it is also conferred to chiefs of state and diplomatic envoys who travel to Korea. This program has conferred the citizenship by selecting beneficiaries annually since 1958.

This year’s honorary citizens include those who contribute in a variety of fields including foreign investment promotion, public order and security, volunteer service, tourism marketing, and job creation. Among them Jeffrey D. Jones, an American lawyer serving as a member of the Seoul International Business Advisory Council (SIBAC) and as the Vice Chairman of the Foreign Investment Advisory Council (FIAC), has provided a wide range of advice about encouraging the investment of foreign companies in South Korea. Another recipient, Ibraheem Abdul Ganiyi, is a member of the Foreign Affairs Police Advisory Committee of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and the Foreign Crime Prevention Committee of the Yongsan Police Station. In this role he is in charge of advice for public order policies concerning foreigners.

So far a total of 712 foreigners from 92 countries have been conferred this honorary citizenship, including famous Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan (1999), Dutch football team manager Guus Hiddink (2002), and former American football player Hines Edward Ward, Jr. (2006). (Anne Ladouceur, the creator of Korea4Expats, was inducted onto the roll of honourary citizens in 2010.)
