For a Beautiful Smile….Beautiful Teeth!

by Wook Dong Kim, D.D.S., M.S.D., Ph.D. (Prosthodontist at A+ Dental Clinic), 28/10/2009

First impressions are important– and a beautiful smile can play an important role in creating a good impression when we meet someone for the first time. However, so many of us are limited to tightlipped smiles because we prefer to hide our uneven or wide-gapped front teeth.  If this description fits you, then take heart. Korea offers you a number of affordable solutions that will allow you to greet the world with a beautiful open smile.
One option is braces. However, although a number of adult expats do get braces during their stay in Korea, this process may not be the best solution for everyone. Braces can be difficult to apply for teeth of a certain size. Moreover, the amount of time and money needed to correct dental problems with braces may require a greater investment than many people want to make. Not to worry, there are other ways to fix the problem of gaps or uneven front teeth.

The simplest and most inexpensive way to restore front teeth is with resin fillings (bonding). This method is appropriate for small gaps or areas with only minor cavities. It is relatively inexpensive, minimizes tooth loss and generally requires only one visit.  On the other hand, the resin fillings may change in color later and are not as durable as porcelain crowns and/or amalgam fillings.

Another option to correct the problem is to place a porcelain crown on the ground teeth. This involves fusing a porcelain outer shell to a metal crown and is likely to be used when a large portion of the tooth is damaged or a tooth becomes part of dental bridge. Since a dentist needs to grind a significant portion of the original tooth away, it isn’t a desirable option for filling the small gaps between the teeth or enhancing the appearance of discolored-teeth.

Laminate veneers can cover the drawbacks of the restorative dental treatments described above.  Laminate veneers, which are wafer-thin laminates or shells of tooth-colored ceramic (porcelain) materials, are “cemented” to the front surface of teeth that have been shaved about 0.3mm.  Made of ceramic materials, they don’t change color and are durable with a low incidence of fracture. In addition, the amount of reduction is minimal and there is less damage to the teeth than with a porcelain crown.  As such, laminate veneers are highly recommended to deal with spaces between the teeth, abnormally small-sized or badly stained teeth. However, they are not the ideal treatment for crooked or root-canalled teeth.

Resin fillings, porcelain crowns, and laminate veneers are great options to improve the appearance of your teeth. Since the ideal treatment depends on your specific dental condition, a consultation with a dental specialist will help you to determine the best restorative treatment choice for your dental problem.

The quality of these cosmetic dental treatments is very high in Korea, while the cost is very affordable. The dental specialists at A Plus Dental Clinic look forward to helping you achieve the most beautiful smile possible!
