Coincidentlly just hours after the release of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, the two Michaels were also released and landed back in Canada on 25 September 2021 after 1000+ days of detention.

One of the two Canadians held in China since the detention in December 2018, days after Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested at the request of the U.S. at the airport in Vancouver, lived for a number of years in South Korea. Many members of the expat community here know Michael Spavor and that includes me. Michael and I were both on the board of Directors of the Royal Asiatic Society and ran into each other at various events as we were both involved in a number of organisations and activities in Seoul.

The hearings for the two Michaels (Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig) were held on a Friday and Monday respectively a few weeks ago, in mid-March 2021. Officials from the Canadian embassy and other nations including the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Australia, Sweden and Germany were present outside the court as they sought access to the hearing. They were not allowed to enter. There has been no decision as yet but it’s worth remembering that Chinese courts have a conviction rate of over 99% according to Canadian and other international media.

As a result of this long (and unexpected) detention, Michael has lost everything he invested in his company. His friends and family have started a GoFundMe page and are hoping that they can raise enough to help him get on is feet once he is finally freed.
