Naturalized Korean Carries Taegeukgi

Congresswoman Jasmine Lee carried the Taegeukgi, the national flag of the Republic of Korea, for  the opening ceremony of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games. 
  
A member of the ruling Saenuri Party, Congresswoman Lee sitson the 'Environment and Labor committee. The first naturalized Korean to be a congresswoman, Jasmine Lee was named an honorary ambassador of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games in June. As an honorary ambassador, she did her best to enhance the value of multiculturalism - giving a sense of unity among Asian countries, worthy of the Asian Games’ image “Communication and Unity, Sharing and Caring.”  

The flag bearing ceremony featured the entrance of Taegeukgi, the national flag of the Republic of Korea. She was one of the eight individuals proudly making the name of the Republic of Korea shine in the world and expressing the desire to let peace begin in the Republic of Korea. The other flag bearers included Um Hong-gil, the first Asian awardee of the Himalayan Crown, Lee Bong-ju, a marathon athlete, Park Se-ri, a golf star and Lim Chun-ae, a three-time track and field champion at Seoul Asian Games, Seok Hae-gyun, captain of the Samho Jewelry in the Gulf of Aden, Hyun-bin, a Korean actor and Kang Su-jin, a Korean ballerina.

Born Jasmine Bacurnay y Villanueva in the Philippines, Congresswoman is the widow of Lee Dong-ho whom she married in the mid 1990's and who died of a heart attack in 2010. Ms Lee became a Korean citizen in 1998 and was elected as a proportional representive in the National Assembly in 2012. She represents the over 200,000 foreign spouses in Korea, many of whom are naturalized citizens as well.
