A Home Of Our Own

by Probationary Theatre, 11/04/2011

Probationary Theatre Company is a relatively new expat run theater group in Korea, having been in existence here for only a little over a year. But the two directors of the community theater group, Desiree Munro and Liam Mitchinson, have a wealth of experience behind them. Both of them have been involved in acting and theater for well over 15 years back in their home country Australia in various roles from stage management to guest roles on prime time tv shows.

Now they have chosen Seoul as the place to make their dreams of creating their own theater a reality. Desiree and Liam are on the eve of opening the doors of the very first dedicated expat theater space in Seoul; the White Box Theatre.  Located only a 3 minute walk from exit 2 of Hyochang Park station on subway line 6 (stop 627), a very central position in Seoul and less than 5 minutes from Itaewon, the White Box Theatre is within easy reach or most foreigners living in Seoul.

Munro and Mitchinson, a married couple, envisage the White Box Theatre as a multi-purpose entertainment venue. 'While the space is equipped with facilities for staging theater and seating 60 to 70 people, it could also be quite easily used for stand up comedy, seminars, rehearsals, screening movies and a range of other social events,' says technical director, Mitchinson. Indeed, Probationary Theatre have plans for a range of entertaining and inclusive events throughout 2011. They plan to stage a range of theatrical productions as well as play reading groups, scene study workshops, movie nights, Play in a Day events (where small teams of artists will work to create brand new performance pieces inside a single day) and The Shorts Show (a theatrical version of an open mic night where artists get 15 minutes of stage time to present a section of a 'work in progress' to an open minded audience and receive quality feedback.)

'We primarily began work on opening the space to allow us to put on our own shows after we got so tired of trying to present theater in bar atmosphere,' says Munro, who is Probationary Theatre's artistic director. 'We also want the White Box to be a place where all expat artists can have the opportunity to present their work in a dedicated space. We are open for other groups to make use of WBT for rehearsals and shows.'
