SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY
Korea International School (KIS) is a private, proprietary, non-profit, nonsectarian school established in 2000 in the Gangnam neighborhood of southern Seoul. In 2006, KIS relocated to a modern, state-of-the-art facility in the rapidly-growing southern Seoul suburb of Pangyo. The stated mission of KIS is to “inspire students with a passion for learning and to cultivate the competence, self-assurance, initiative, and creativity necessary for success in the global community.” In 2007, we launched a 1:1 laptop program at KIS to give students the skills needed in the digital, information-rich 21st century workplace. KIS offers a fully WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges)-accredited PK-12, comprehensive university preparatory curriculum. KIS enrollment has grown each year since its inception. Enrollment is selective. KIS also offers winter and summer programs that emphasize experiential learning. Students and families from all over the world make KIS their home.
CURRICULUM
KIS offers a comprehensive, college-preparatory curriculum. The AP program began in 2005-2006 with four classes and has increased to twenty four classes. Web Design, Video Production, Theater, Concert Choir, Psychology, Sociology, Creative Writing, and Contemporary Global Issues are examples of some of our numerous elective classes providing opportunities to experience diversity throughout the curriculum. The KIS elementary curriculum (PK-5) helps children develop the skills and attitudes they will need both at the elementary level and for a lifetime of learning. In addition to academics, the elementary curriculum emphasizes the arts, student activities and athletics to enable students to acquire problem solving, decision making, and critical thinking skills. All instruction at the elementary level utilizes play as an essential part of the learning process.
ATHLETICS AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
KIS’s wide range of co-curricular opportunities provides students with a rich experience outside of the classroom. Strong participation is a hallmark of KIS students. Student athletes participate in the following competitive varsity sports in the Korean American Interscholastic Activity Conference (KAIAC): volleyball, cross country, tennis, soccer, basketball, swimming, and cheerleading. In 2010, KIS’s varsity sports began competing in the Asian International Schools Association (AISA).
Students may participate in a wide variety of clubs in elementary, middle and high school. Past offerings at the elementary level have been: Arts and Crafts with Paper, Cooking Fun, Computer Club, Video Production, Museum Club, Beginning Cross-Stitch, Culture Club, Jump Rope Club, Korean Folktales.
A variety of clubs provide opportunities for KIS middle and high school students to extend the classroom experience. A sampling of clubs offered includes: Habitat for Humanity, Model United Nations, Jazz Band, Camping Club, National Honor Society, Actions of Compassion, and the Global Issues Network.
